Dr. Kearney is an associate professor in the Department of Public Health, Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University (ECU). Prior to joining ECU, he was an environmental epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Center for Environmental Health in Atlanta and the State of Florida, Department of Health, Division of Environmental Health.

His primary research interests include investigating environmental issues in managing asthma and other environmental and occupational health concerns that impact rural and vulnerable populations.

He holds a bachelor of science in urban and regional planning from ECU, a master of public health from the University of South Florida, and a doctor of public health in environmental health sciences from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has authored over 50 publications and is co-editor of Environmental Public Health; The Practitioner’s Guide, recently published by the American Public Health Association. He has received several awards including the North Carolina Asthma Champion award and the Senator Ken Pruitt Medallion of Excellence for his contributions to the field of environmental public health.
