Bill Ross is former secretary of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources. While there, the department played a principal role in the expansion of the state park system; enacted the North Carolina Clean Smokestacks Act, landmark legislation that mandated the reduction of harmful emissions from the state’s coal fired power plants by more than 70 percent; and built the Nature Research Center, an innovative new wing for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.

After serving as secretary, Ross rejoined the law firm of Brooks, Pierce in Raleigh and is a visiting professor at the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University. He is on the board of directors for the Environmental Working Group, and is chair of the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Authority and of the National Advisory Council on Environmental Policy and Technology at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

He is a graduate of Davidson College and of the University of Virginia School of Law.
